Why old and new belong together.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

There\u2019s something about a room filled entirely with new things that can feel a little too finished.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Everything may be beautiful. Everything may coordinate. But sometimes, what\u2019s missing is the thing you can\u2019t order from a catalogue: a little history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That\u2019s why I love mixing old and new.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A vintage object beside something modern creates contrast. One makes you notice the other. And instead of a room feeling like it was decorated all at once, it begins to feel as though it came together naturally over time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let One Old Thing Interrupt the New<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

You don\u2019t need a room full of antiques to make vintage work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes, one unexpected piece is enough.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A worn silver tray on a clean modern table. An old ceramic bowl on sleek cabinetry. A vintage shell dish beside a contemporary lamp.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That little interruption keeps everything from feeling too perfect. It also makes the room far more interesting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Look for Contrast, Not Coordination<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

I don\u2019t think old and new need to match.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Actually, I usually prefer when they don\u2019t.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A polished modern surface becomes more interesting beside something with patina. A delicate scalloped edge can soften a piece of furniture with strong, architectural lines. Something ornate can look completely different when it\u2019s removed from a traditional setting and placed somewhere minimal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Instead of asking, Does this match?<\/em> I like asking, Does this make the other thing more interesting?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mix Materials, Too<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The mix doesn\u2019t have to stop with age.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Silver beside wood. A worn metal object on stone. Old porcelain next to glass. Something soft beside something sculptural.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Different materials reflect light, age differently, and bring their own texture into a space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s often the combination, not the individual objects, that makes a little corner feel special.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Give Old Objects a New Context<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

One of my favourite things about vintage is taking an object out of the setting you would expect to find it in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A champagne bucket doesn\u2019t have to wait for champagne. Fill it with flowers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An old ashtray can become a jewelry dish.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A silver serving bowl can live on a coffee table.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A tiny tray can hold perfume, matches, or whatever else seems to land there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The original purpose is part of the object\u2019s history. It doesn\u2019t have to determine its future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Don\u2019t Try to Finish the Room<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Maybe this is the most important part.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A collected home doesn\u2019t need to be completed in a weekend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Leave a little space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wait until you stumble across the strange little object you can\u2019t stop thinking about. Bring something home from a trip. Move things from one room to another. Let your taste change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The best mix of old and new often happens slowly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And perhaps that\u2019s why it feels so different from simply decorating a room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You\u2019re not just filling a space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
