The vintage pieces that always make me stop and take a closer look.<\/em><\/p>\n

I can walk through an antique market, estate sale or thrift store and pass hundreds of things without thinking twice.<\/p>\n

And then there are the pieces that stop me every time.<\/p>\n

I don’t necessarily buy every one I find. Condition matters. Price matters. Sometimes I simply don’t need another one, although that hasn’t always stopped me.<\/p>\n

But certain shapes, materials and details have become almost impossible for me to walk past.<\/p>\n

These are the pieces I always look twice at.<\/p>\n

1. Silver Shells<\/h2>\n

I will always notice a shell.<\/p>\n

There is something about the shape that feels both sculptural and delicate. In silver, especially, it becomes even more beautiful.<\/p>\n

I look for unusual proportions, scalloped edges, little feet, maker’s marks and signs that the piece has been around for a while. Some are beautifully polished. Others have darkened into a soft patina.<\/p>\n

They’re also endlessly useful. A shell can hold jewelry, keys, matches, salt or absolutely nothing.<\/p>\n

Sometimes an object is beautiful enough to simply exist.<\/p>\n

2. Small Silver Trays<\/h2>\n

The smaller the tray, the more likely I am to pick it up.<\/p>\n

I love pieces that don’t immediately demand a specific purpose. A little tray can move around a home endlessly: beside the bed, on a vanity, at the entrance, on a coffee table.<\/p>\n

I’m especially drawn to engraved borders, interesting edges and older hotel or restaurant pieces.<\/p>\n

They may have once had a very specific job.<\/p>\n

I like imagining what they’ll become next.<\/p>\n

3. Anything Scalloped<\/h2>\n

Apparently, I have a weakness for a good edge.<\/p>\n

Scallops, fluting and soft curves immediately catch my eye, especially when they’re paired with a material that feels a little heavier or more substantial.<\/p>\n

That contrast is what I love: something strong made softer by its shape.<\/p>\n

A scalloped bowl or tray doesn’t need much styling. The silhouette does most of the work.<\/p>\n

4. Pieces From Somewhere<\/h2>\n

Turn it over.<\/p>\n

That’s one of the first things I do when I find something interesting.<\/p>\n

A maker’s mark is wonderful, but I especially love finding objects connected to a place, a hotel, restaurant, city or maker I wasn’t expecting.<\/p>\n

Suddenly, a little tray isn’t just a little tray anymore.<\/p>\n

It came from somewhere.<\/p>\n

Maybe I’ll be able to uncover its story. Maybe I won’t. Either way, that tiny clue makes me want to know more.<\/p>\n

5. The Slightly Strange Ones<\/h2>\n

And then there are the things I can’t explain.<\/p>\n

The tiny fish dish. The unusual animal. The oddly shaped bowl. The object that makes you wonder what on earth it was originally used for.<\/p>\n

Those might be my favourite finds of all.<\/p>\n

A home needs a few things that don’t make perfect sense. Things that make someone pick them up and ask, Where did you find this?<\/p>\n

Because sometimes the best vintage piece isn’t the most valuable, useful or recognizable one in the room.<\/p>\n
