One of the most overlooked vintage objects deserves another life.
Heavy crystal, colored glass, sculptural shapes. Some ashtrays are simply too beautiful to leave behind.
And who says they still have to be ashtrays?
Here are six ways to give them a new life.

1. Create a Ritual or Smudging Tray
Palo Santo, sage and incense all need somewhere to live, and a beautiful vintage ashtray can make the whole little ritual feel more intentional.
There’s something I especially love about the contrast between natural wood, dried sage or incense and heavy crystal, colored glass or silver.
It can sit on a coffee table, bathroom counter or wherever you usually take a quiet moment for yourself.
2. Create a Mini Perfume Display
I will put miniature perfume bottles in almost anything beautiful.
A vintage ashtray is no exception.
Suddenly, something practical becomes a little collection.
3. Fill It With Little Memories
Not everything we keep needs to be hidden away in a box.
Polaroids, old postcards, photo booth strips, handwritten notes and ticket stubs. The little pieces of paper we collect over time can be some of the most personal things in our homes.
I love the idea of loosely gathering a few of them in a beautiful vintage ashtray on a coffee table or dresser.
You can change them as you collect new memories, leave a favorite photograph peeking out, or layer old postcards together so they become part of the room.
4. Make It a Jewelry Catch-All
This might be one of the easiest ways to repurpose a vintage ashtray.
Place one beside your bed, on your dresser or next to the bathroom sink and use it for the jewelry you remove at the end of the day.
Rings, earrings and delicate chains look especially beautiful against thick crystal or sculptural glass.
And I love the contrast.
Something that feels heavy and substantial holding something tiny and delicate.
5. Give Your Candle Lighter a Home
If you always have candles burning, you probably also have a lighter that never seems to have a proper place.
Instead of hiding it in a drawer, keep a beautiful lighter or a box of matches in a vintage ashtray beside your candles.
It makes something completely ordinary feel intentional.
I especially love this on a coffee table. A candle, a sculptural vintage ashtray and a beautiful lighter become their own little arrangement rather than a collection of random objects.
6. Use It as an Everyday Catch-All
Keys. Coins. Hair clips. Lip balm. That random little thing you keep putting down and then losing.
Sometimes the best use for a beautiful object is simply giving all of your not-so-beautiful objects somewhere to go.
Put a vintage ashtray near the entrance for your keys, on your desk for little odds and ends or on a coffee table for whatever tends to accumulate there.
It doesn’t need a complicated purpose.
It just needs to be useful to you.
When I see an old ashtray, I’m rarely thinking about cigarettes.
I’m looking at the weight.
The shape.
The material.
The way the light moves through the glass.
Whether it would look beautiful sitting on a table with absolutely nothing in it.
The original purpose of a vintage object is part of its history, but it doesn’t have to dictate its future.
So the next time you find a beautiful old ashtray at an antique shop, flea market or estate sale, don’t immediately think, I don’t smoke.
Pick it up.
You might be looking at a place for your Palo Santo, miniature perfumes, little memories, jewelry, candle lighter, or simply a beautiful object you didn’t know your home needed.
